Clutch Hitting, Stellar Defense and Pitching Lead Softball to 6-3 Win at Middle Tennessee

Sophomore Makayla Navarro drives in winning run with two-out double in seventh

MURFREESBORO, TENN. – FIU sophomore Makayla Navarro laced a two-out double that scored a pair of runs in top of the seventh to break up a tie contest and help lift the FIU softball team to a 6-3 victory at Middle Tennessee in the middle game of a three-game series on Friday.

FIU starting pitcher Ella Whitney had one of the best performances of her career in the circle as she earned her first win of the season after going six innings and limiting the Blue Raiders to just a pir of earned runs while scattering 10 hits.

Whitney was aided by outstanding play by the Panthers' defense including a number of highlight plays, including a diving grab by freshman center fielder Kally Meredith to end a threat in the sixth that saw Middle Tennessee have runners on second and third and one out before coming away empty.

Bailey Grossenbacher continued her torrid hitting of late with a pair of key doubles.  Her first extended the Panthers' lead to 3-1 in the third and she added a second in the seventh, following Navarro's clutch double and allowing her to score to account for the final 6-3 margin.  Grossenbacher now has compiled 11 hits over the last nine games.

Navarro also gave the Panthers their first lead of the game with a single to left that scored Meredith in the third to put FIU ahead 2-1.

Middle Tennessee (16-21, 4-7 CUSA) tied the game at 3-3 with a pair of runs in the fifth, including a homer by Julia Garcia to set up Navarro's clutch hit.

FIU sophomore Brooke McNichols pitched the final inning to close out the win and earn her first save of the season.

Meredith, Navarro and Grossenbacher all finished with two hits to lead a Panthers' offense that posted eight and only struck out once in the win.
