MIAMI – The FIU baseball program dropped the series finale to the Wofford Terriers, falling just short of a comeback, losing 13-11 Sunday afternoon from FIU Baseball Stadium.
After Wofford took a 10-3 lead in the sixth, the Panthers mounted a six-run seventh, cutting the deficit to one. FIU trailed two runs into the ninth eventually losing the rubber match. Offensively, FIU logged 14 hits as a ballcub with four players (
Armando Becerra,
Samuel Fischer,
Kishon Frett, and
Jeff Liquori) with multi-hit afternoons.
The Terriers took a 1-0 lead in the second but was quickly evaporated as
Kishon Frett belted his team-leading 11
th homer of the year, to take a 2-1 advantage. Wofford tied up the ballgame in the third on a sacrifice fly, before taking the lead on a RBI single in the fourth. Freshman
Samuel Fischer put the Panthers right back in the game with a RBI base knock in the bottom half.
In the sixth, Wofford put up seven runs in the frame to lead by seven yet FIU responded. After Becerra and Liquori provided RBI hits,
Alex Ulloa drove a double down the right field line, cutting the deficit to three.
Kishon Frett added to his stellar day at the plate with a RBI single to right center. The redshirt junior went 2-for-3 and was on base four times throughout the afternoon. Fischer singled to the shortstop for his second RBI hit of the afternoon to make it 10-9 after seven innings of play. The freshman now has back-to-back games with multi-hit efforts.
Wofford responded by plating a pair in the eighth, while FIU added a pair on a Liquori RBI hit and
Matthew Corpas RBI single. Liquori leads the team with 36 RBI after plating three on Sunday.
In the ninth, the Terriers added insurance on a run scored and was enough to hold on for the win.
On the mound,
Cameron Knox went three innings and allowed two earned runs in his second start of the week.
David Eckaus suffered the loss, working 2.1 innings on one earned run and a strikeout. Lefty
Jaydon Bishop threw 1.1 inning of no-hit baseball on the afternoon.
Ryne Guida extended his on-base streak to 21 games with a single.
