Softball Drops Series Finale to Sam Houston

Panthers close out regular season next weekend at Louisiana Tech

MIAMI – The FIU softball team allowed four runs in the top of the seventh after the game was tied at 4-4 in what turned into an eventual 8-5 loss to Sam Houston in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.

Sam Houston broke open the 4-4 deadlock with four runs on four hits in the top of the seventh – with Julia Herzinger breaking the tie on a single to shortstop that plated Tricia Yarotsky with the go-ahead run.  Brodie Quinlan drove home two more on a single to left center before Hailey Carter made the score 8-4 with a sacrifice fly.

Freshman Zamya McBurrows, who finished the game with a season-high four RBI, got the Panthers within 8-5 with a single that scored Kally Meredith.

FIU took the game's first lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first.  Ashton Lansdell scored Meredith for the game's initial run on a sacrifice fly before McBurrows extended the lead to 2-0 with an RBI single that allowed Bailey Grossenbacher to cross.

Sam Houston battled back with three runs in the top of the second – with the big hit coming on a two-run double by Jordan Peno.  Ellie Grill followed with a single to score another run and put the Bearkats in front 3-2.

McBurrows reclaimed the lead for the Panthers with her second and third RBI of the contest as Grossenbacher and Meredith both scored on a double that split the gap in left center and gave FIU a 4-3 advantage thru three innings.

Hannah Schaeffer launched a solo homer to left in the top of the four to deadlock the score at 4-4.

Sydney Birling (4-6) took the loss for the Panthers after allowing seven hits and four runs over 2.2 innings of relief.

Daryn Grams (1-3) notched the win for Sam Houston following 1.2 innings of relief that saw her give up one hot and one run.
