Baseball Falls In Saturday Night Battle With Sam Houston

FIU looks ahead to senior day tomorrow at noon

MIAMI – The FIU baseball program dropped it's Saturday night contest to the Sam Houston Bearkats, losing 16-13 from FIU Baseball Stadium.

The night saw a combined 39 runs on the board across 32 hits, 16 for each ballclub including eight home runs. The Panthers led right from the start, until Sam Houston scored eight runs in the ninth, ultimately coming away with the series victory on Saturday.

FIU took the lead in the first inning on a three-run span that included a two-run homer for shortstop Alex Ulloa. Sam Houston cut the deficit to one on a two-run home run in the third inning.

Yet, the Panthers offense opened up in the bottom half with a six-spot including three RBI singles from Chase Engelhard, Kishon Frett, and Andre Martinez. Brendan Roney logged a sacrifice fly before Brylan West belted a two-run shot to right centerfield for his ninth of the season, making it 9-2 after three.

Sam Houston rallied with four in the fourth, making it just a three-run game. FIU slowed extended their lead in the fifth as Guida ripped a two-run homer out to left center field for his eight of the season alongside 52 RBI, which is a career-high for the senior.

After the Bearkats tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth, it was a three-run game heading to the ninth as Sam Houston stormed to make it 16-11 in the ninth. Armando Becerra posted the Panthers fourth homer of the night on a two-run homer, closing the night in a 16-13 decision.

David Eckaus made his second start in the past three games, allowing four earned runs in 3.1 innings thrown with five strikeouts. Zac Lampton allowed just two earned runs over two innings of work on five punchouts. Ryan Cabarcas was tagged with the loss (5-5), allowing the eventual tying and go-ahead runs to the Bearkats.

Five Panthers secured multi-hit efforts (Becerra, Frett, Guida, Martinez, and Ulloa). For Frett, he secured his first career four-hit game, while Ulloa extended his hit-streak to six games with four multi-hit games in that stretch alone.
