Baseball Falls to Iowa in Regular Season Finale

West and Ulloa added with homers on the afternoon

DES MOINES, Iowa – The FIU baseball program closed out the regular season falling to the Iowa Hawkeyes, 16-4 in seven innings Saturday afternoon.
 
FIU closes out the regular season (25-27) and prepare for the CUSA Championships this Wednesday, May 22 in Ruston, La, marking their first appearance in the postseason tournament since 2018.
 
The Panthers took the early lead in the first after Armando Becerra scored from third on a Jeff Liquori groundout. Iowa responded in the second with a solo shot, tying the game at one.
 
In the third, Brylan West put FIU up a run on a solo shot hit in left-centerfield for his 10th home run of the season. The Hawkeyes tacked on three runs in the bottom half, including back-to-back homers. Into the fourth, Iowa put up nine runs in the frame, eventually opening the game to a 13-2 lead.
 
FIU got two runs back in the sixth, beginning with a solo home run off the bat of Alex Ulloa, his 10th of the season. The Panthers ended their regular season with four players in double-digit homers (Kishon Frett, Liquori, Ulloa, and West). In addition, the 77 home runs sit fourth all-time in program history.
 
Brendan Roney scored the fourth run of the afternoon for FIU on a RBI single to right field. Iowa added with a trio of runs in the sixth, closing the game with a series win in seven innings.
 
Cameron Knox (1-6) made his 13th start of the season, allowed four earned runs over 2.1 innings with a strikeout. David Eckaus and Jackson Ritchey got work out the bullpen. Kevin Martin pitched an inning, allowing a earned run. Iowa native Owen Puk worked the sixth on three strikeouts and no runs given up.
 
Ryne Guida finished the regular season with a three-hit effort including his team-leading 18th double of the season. The senior recorded his 21st multi-hit game of the season.
