CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The FIU men's soccer program fell to the No. 17 ranked North Carolina Tar Heels on Thursday night in a 3-1 decision on the road.
After holding a 1-0 lead with 15 minutes left in the match, the Panthers gave up three unanswered goals in the final minutes for their third loss of the year.
FIU struck first in the first half as forward
Michael Appiah used his speed to run past two defenders and hit the back of the net in the 23
rd minute. Appiah's score was the first goal for a Panther this season in 2024.
Heading into the second half with a lead, the Panthers continued to apply pressure early in the last 45 before North Carolina stormed back beginning in the 75
th minute to tie up the match at one. The Tar Heels then added a second goal in the 76
th minute and added their third score in the 78
th.
On the night, FIU posted nine shots with Appiah and
Enrique Mutsoli each logged two shots each.
In net, goalkeeper
Nigel Van Haveren rang up nine saves in net, the most for Van Haveren in a single game this season.
