MIAMI — FIU's volleyball program fell in straight sets to Texas Tech in its home opener on Thursday evening inside the Ocean Bank Convocation Center.
The Panthers (2-9) opened their home slate against the Red Raiders (8-1) on Thursday night and were defeated by set scores of 25-15, 25-23 and 25-19, respectively. Jillian Huckabey had a team-high 10 kills and added 11 digs for a double-double.
Anna Feldkamp, Kindyl Kilar and Courtney O'Brien each chipped in five kills in support. Savannah Cook facilitated the attack with 28 of FIU's 33 assists. As a team, the Panther had 34 kills to Texas Tech's 40. FIU hit .109 while the Red Raiders attacked at a .264 clip.
In set one, Texas Tech came out firing and built a 12-6 early lead. FIU trailed the Red Raiders for the rest of the frame, falling 25-15.
Set two was the most critical juncture of the match as the Panthers rode early momentum to an 11-7 lead. Feldkamp delivered a kill to put FIU up 15-11 as the Panthers were in position to even up the match at 1—all.
As the set progressed, Texas Tech eventually evened the score at 18-18. With the score tied at 23-all, the Red Raiders earned the final two points to salvage the 25-23 victory.
In the final frame, FIU kept up with the Red Raiders once again as an O'Brien kill put the Panthers down 12-10. A 7-3 run for Texas Tech proved to be the difference, however, as the Red Raiders earned the sweep with a 25-19 win.
