Swim & Dive Opens Calendar Year With FIU Sprint Invite

Panthers set to host Tulane and Assumption University at Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center

MIAMI – The FIU swimming and diving program is set to return to action Saturday, Jan. 4 hosting the FIU Sprint Invite at the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center, with racing beginning at 10 a.m.

The FIU Sprint Invite features a full slate of swim and dive events, but with all the 50-yard races using a unique tournament-style scoring.
 
Swimmers in the 50-yard races will battle it out over three rounds with the final round being a two-person head-to-head race. The 50-yard races will include the backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle.
 
American Athletic Conference (AAC) opponent Tulane and Division II program Assumption will compete on Saturday, while Tulane and The College of New Jersey will field divers.
 
It marks the first competition for the Panthers since their home dual meet vs the Marshall Thundering Herd on Monday, Dec. 16.

LAST TIME OUT
The Panthers took on Marshall in late December, falling 179-121.  FIU tallied for five first-place finishes on the day including two relay wins.
 
Freshman Tawannah McLemore led the way for the Panthers, notching three top finishes. She earned an individual victory in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.54 and secured second place in the 100-yard freestyle (52.86).
 
McLemore also contributed to both relay victories. The Panthers opened the meet strong with a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, as McLemore teamed up with Frida Stretre Løbersli, Sally Olsson, and Jessica Shpilko to clock 1:45.23.
 
UP NEXT
Meet competition resumes on Saturday, Jan. 25 as the Panthers head to Fort Myers to take on Florida Gulf Coast.  Events are set to begin at 11 a.m.
