TULSA, Okla. – The FIU men's soccer program dropped a hard-fought 3-2 decision at Tulsa on Saturday night, despite a strong first-half performance led by senior Eduardo Mustre, who recorded a brace for the Panthers.
FIU (5-7-2, 3-3 American) jumped out to an early advantage behind Mustre's two-goal effort in the opening 45 minutes — his second multi-goal match of the season and fifth of his career. With the pair, Mustre now leads the Panthers with six goals on the year.
The Panthers opened the scoring in the sixth minute, as Diego Sanchez found Joao Domingues on the left side for a cross into the box that connected with Mustre's header to make it 1-0. The assist marked Domingues' fifth of the season, setting a new career high and giving him three assists over the last four matches.
Tulsa answered in the 29th minute to even the score at one apiece, but FIU quickly regained the lead just five minutes later. Leonardo Consoloni played a long ball forward from goalkeeper Nigel Van Haveren, setting up Mustre, who rifled home his second of the night to give FIU a 2-1 halftime advantage.
The Golden Hurricane responded with two goals in the second half — striking in the 52nd and 68th minutes — to pull ahead for the final result.
FIU finished with eight total shots, including four from Mustre, while Enrique Mutsoli and Scott Neil each added shots on goal. Consoloni posted his fourth assist of the season, while Sanches added his second of the campaign.
In net, Nigel Van Haveren recorded four saves, increasing his conference-leading total to 43 on the season.
