Women's Basketball Downed by Jacksonville on Saturday Afternoon

Four Panthers scored in double-digits, led by Rhema Collins with 19

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — FIU women's basketball (1-3) was defeated on the road by Jacksonville (4-1) on Saturday afternoon, 80-69.

The Panthers kept it close in the first quarter, ending the opening frame trailing 15-13. Jacksonville extended their lead in the second quarter, heading into halftime with a 46-34 lead.

Out of the half, the Panthers offense started to roll, using an 18-0 run from the 5:06-0:57 marks to take the lead heading into the final quarter, 58-53. Parris Atkins had seven points in the quarter, ending the contest with 13 points. It is the third game in a row the senior has ended in double-digit points.

Jacksonville took the lead in the fourth quarter with 8:04 left to play and did not look back, sending the Panthers home with a loss.

Junior Rhema Collins put up a career-high 19 points, going an efficient 9-10 from the free throw line. The combo guard/forward added on 10 rebounds, one block and one steal to finish off her second career double-double, with her last coming earlier this season against Bethune-Cookman.

Redshirt sophomore Fantasia James and junior Denika Lightbourne were the last Panthers to end in double-digits, both of which ending with 15 points in the contest. James, her second double-digit performance of the season, went 5-8 from the field and added on five rebounds to her stat line. Lightbourne, also her second double-digit scoring mark in the campaign, went 6-10 with three rebounds and two steals to round out her afternoon.

UP NEXT

The Panthers will welcome UMBC, Seattle and Presbyterian to the Ocean Bank Convocation Center for the annual FIU Thanksgiving Classic from November 28-30. FIU will start the tournament on Friday, November 28 at 11 a.m. against UMBC.
