Men's Soccer Advances to the Semifinals of The American Conference Tournament

Alfonso Gilleard-Soriano scored the match's only goal, his first of his career

MIAMI – The FIU men's soccer program advanced to the semi-finals of the American Conference Tournament off the foot of Alfonso Gilleard-Soriano as the four-seed Panthers beat five-seed Missouri State on Friday evening, 1-0.

A defensive matchup from the opening whistle, neither team was able to garner many scoring chances in the first half as both teams got off three shots, with the Bears seeing one shot on goal to the Panthers' zero. The match would go into halftime knotted at zero.

Out of the break, both teams saw more scoring opportunities, with the Bears shooting five shots and two shots on goal, and the Panthers getting off four shots and two shots on goal.

The stalemate ended when FIU's Alfonso Gilleard-Soriano found the back of the net after a scrum in the Bears' box, notching the sophomore's first career goal, proving to be the game-winner and advancing FIU to the semifinals of the American Conference Tournament.

Panthers' standout goalkeeper Nigel Van Haveren proved to be crucial in the match, coming away with three saves and the junior's fourth shutout of the season.

Fifth year Eduardo Mustre saw the most shot attempts for the Panthers with three, while Alfonso Gilleard-Soriano had two with one shot on goal. Graduate student Tibo Gobet and junior Pasquale Capriati both were able to notch shot attempts, with Gobet receiving one shot on goal.

This is the second straight year the Panthers have advanced to play in the semifinals of the American Tournament. Last season, the Panthers made a run to The American championship, beating Florida Atlantic and Memphis.
