MIAMI – The FIU baseball program came up short in the series opener against New Mexico State on Friday night, falling 6-4 at FIU Baseball Stadium.
The Aggies (18-16, 6-4 CUSA) jumped out to an early 5-0 lead through four innings, capitalizing on three FIU errors and a pair of timely hits. The Panthers (20-13, 4-5 CUSA) mounted a comeback to cut the deficit to one by the eighth inning, but New Mexico State held on for the two-run win.
New Mexico State opened the scoring in the second, cashing in on FIU's defensive miscues with a four-run frame highlighted by an RBI single. An RBI groundout in the fourth extended the lead to 5-0.
FIU responded in the bottom half of the fourth. After Alex Ulloa and Kishon Frett reached base, Brylan West drove in a run with a single up the middle. Austin Dearing followed with an RBI single of his own to cut the lead to 5-2. Andrew Ildefonso capped the rally with a bloop RBI single to shallow left, trimming the deficit to 5-3.
Frett brought the Panthers within one in the seventh with a towering solo home run—his team-leading 11th of the season—launched 453 feet.
However, the Aggies tacked on an insurance run in the ninth with a solo shot to push the lead to 6-4, where it would stay.
On the mound, Easton Marks (2-2) took the loss despite allowing just one earned run over four innings with four strikeouts. Tracen Cameron delivered 2.1 hitless innings with four punchouts, while Jarek Woodward closed out the game with 2.2 innings of relief, allowing one earned run and striking out three.
At the plate, FIU collected eight hits. West and Dearing each tallied two-hit nights, with West extending his multi-hit streak to six consecutive games. Javier Crespo, Frett, Ildefonso, and Brendan Roney each chipped in with a hit.
