JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Women's Soccer (6-2-3, 3-0 CUSA) leaves Jacksonville with a win as they beat the Gamecocks (6-5-2, 0-3 CUSA) 2-1 and start CUSA-play 3-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the first half, with the Panthers earning more chances as they went into the half with 12 shots and eight shots on goal. The FIU defense allowed just three shots and and two shots on goal in the first 45 minutes as the match went into the halftime break scoreless.
The Panthers found their first goal of the game early in the second half, as a Grace Morris feed found the head of Jayden Boelter in the 53rd minute, who promptly sunk her fourth goal in the last four matches, giving FIU a 1-0 lead.
The Panthers added on not long after, taking a 2-0 lead. A scuffle off a set-piece corner kick found the foot of freshman Roxy Brewer in the 57th minute, who chipped in her first goal of her career, assisted by Jayden Boelter. It was Boelter's first assist of the season, who ended the match with three points.
The Gamecocks fought back, scoring a goal of their own in the 64th minute, making it a 2-1 game. That would be the only goal for Jax State, dropping their third match of CUSA-play.
The Panther defense allowed just 10 shots in the game and six shots on goal, with junior goalkeeper Valery Restrepo ending with five saves in the match, bringing her total up to 37 on the season.
