Itsaso Madariaga Huegun breaking the school record in the pentathlon and an event win for
Ali Del Re in the 5,000m, FIU women's track & field wrapped up competition at the Dr. Rick McGuire Invitational hosted by the University of Missouri.
Madariaga Huegun, competing in just her second collegiate meet, broke the school record in the pentathlon by scoring a 3848. The record was initially set in 2022 by assistant coach
Fabiola Declet, and her performance placed her second in the event, out-pacing all other freshmen in the event and finishing just behind the event leader, Missouri's Brianna Utecht. She came in first in the pentathlon 800m and second in the long jump.
Del Re claimed the event win in the 5,000m, running a personal best time of 16:40.46 in Columbia. In her second meet of the season, Del Re outpaced runners from Drake, Saint Louis and SIUE, which was FIU's lone event win of the weekend.
Several Panthers return home with PRs over the weekend as well.
Janiya Cesar, who placed third in the weight throw, finished with a best mark of 19.67m. Joining her in the same event was freshman
Zion Singleton, whose 15.04m was the best of her young career.
In the high jump,
Luca Keszthelyi placed second with a jump of 1.80m, and finishing right behind her was
Amaya Bien-Aime (1.77m) and
Gabrielle Flores, who also PR'd with a jump of 1.77m.
Melania Hernaiz Narvaez finished with a time of 2:18.44 in the 800m, and
Beata Wrigstad in the 3K with a time of 9:58.25, both personal bests.
FIU will take some time off before heading to the Music City Challenge hosted by Vanderbilt on Feb. 13.
