MIAMI — Women's soccer (4-6-4, 1-3-1 CUSA) played to a 1-1 draw against Western Kentucky (8-1-6, 2-1-2 CUSA) on Sunday afternoon.
The scoring started early in the tightly contested matchup. Western Kentucky earned their lone goal of the contest on a penalty-kick at the 12:28 mark, netting the opportunity to take a 1-0 lead.
The Panthers did not take long to respond, with FIU earning a penalty-kick of their own less than five minutes later at the 15:10 mark when a foul in the box sent FIU to the spot. Sophomore Roxy Brewer elected to take the chance, netting the score to tie the match at 1-1. The goal marked Brewer's first of the season and second of her career.
The match went into the half tied at one-a-piece.
Out of the break, both teams searched for opportunities but neither could find the deciding score, giving the Panthers their first draw of the conference-slate.
FIU sent out 11 shots and five shots on goal in the contest, with freshman Yuzu Tanida and Roxy Brewer leading the team with two shots each.
The FIU defense and goalkeeper Valery Restrepo kept the Hilltoppers at bay, not allowing a single shot on goal after giving up the goal early in the first half. WKU got off just six shots and one shot on goal in the contest.
