Women's Soccer to Match Up Against Jacksonville State on Sunday Afternoon

The Panthers are looking for their first victory of CUSA-play

MIAMI – Women's soccer (3-5-3, 0-2-0 CUSA) will take on Jacksonville State (3-6-3, 0-1-1 CUSA) at Leyva Family Field at FIU Soccer Stadium on Sunday, October 4 at 1 p.m.

After a non-conference slate that saw the Panthers go 3-3-3, the Panthers are still searching for their first conference win of the season after two CUSA contests.

Game Preview

The Panthers are set to face Jacksonville State, who comes into the match with a 3-6-3 record and are 0-1-1 in contests against conference opponents. The last time FIU faced the Gamecocks was last season when the Panthers won 2-1 in Jacksonville, Alabama.

Freshman Yuzu Tanida ended the non-conference slate with the team-lead in goals scored, netting three goals through the first nine matches of her career, including one game-winner against Jacksonville.

Senior Maya Maxwell was superb in the non-conference as well, leading the team in both points and assists with seven and three, respectively.

With six points against Howard, Maya Maxwell earned her first ever CUSA Offensive Player of the Week for the period ending August 30. Madeline Oliver won CUSA Defensive Player of the Week for the period ending September 13, after the Panther center back led the team to two straight shutout victories and scored the game-winning goal against Stetson.

Longtime Panther goalkeeper Valery Restrepo has played every minute between the posts so far this season, coming into the match with a 1.27 GAA and 40 saves thus far.

Scouting the Gamecocks

Jacksonville State comes into the match with a 3-6-3 record, with their victories coming against Troy, Alabama State and Gardner-Webb. Since their last win, the Gamecocks have gone 0-2-1, including 0-1-1 against CUSA opponents.

Jacksonville State is led by Emma Reeder, with the junior owning seven goals and 14 points on the year, second and third in the conference, respectively. A well-rounded team, the Gamecocks have six other players scoring goals this season. Additionally, six Gamecocks have dished out assists, led by Sunny Ferren with four, coming into the match tied for first in the conference.

Jacksonville State has seen two goalkeepers take the majority of the minutes between the posts, with Ella Holmberg playing and starting in seven matches and owning a 3.33 GAA with 28 saves. Camdyn Magrosky has played in six matches and started in five, currently with a 1.15 GAA and six saves.

Match Notes

The Panthers have played five matches all-time against the Gamecocks with their first coming in the 2005 season. FIUcurrently holds a 3-1-1 record over Jacksonville State.

FIU's match against then-ranked No. 4 Florida State marked the first time the Panthers played a defending national champion since 1999, when FIU played the 1998 national champion Florida Gators, losing 8-0.
