MIAMI– FIU volleyball (14-11, 5-7 CUSA) couldn't replicate its performance from the previous night, falling in straight sets to RV Western Kentucky (18-6, 12-0) for the 31st consecutive time on Saturday.
After a
Lana Sesar kill tied it at nine in the first set, WKU rattled off an 8-3 spread to go up 18-12. The Panthers could not find the offensive juice to get back in it though, dropping the first set 25-17.
Three consecutive blocks and two solos from
Teodora Skocajic started FIU on the right foot in the second up 4-0. After a
Jillian Huckabey kill and Skocajic ace to go up 16-12, FIU looked to keep the foot on the gas, extending it to 19-14 on an
Ivona Lazovic ace. WKU took a timeout and flipped the script, and even after a
Tiyana Cisse kill cut it to 24-23 WKU, the Tops wouldn't be denied, winning a close one 25-23.
FIU battled early in the third frame but never overtook WKU on the scoreboard.
Kamryn Itzen tied it at 11 on an overpass kill, but a 4-0 run for the Tops put them ahead 15-11 at the media. Itzen had two block assists in a 3-0 run to cut it to 18-16, but the Panthers never got closer than two, falling 25-20 in the finale.
Sesar (12) was the only Panther in double figure kills, with Huckabey (7) and Cisse (5) rounding it out. Lazovic 10 ast., 10 digs, three aces) recorded her sixth double-double of the season, and
Marta Lazzarin (15 digs) averaged five digs per set in the loss.
