LYNCHBURG, Va.– A strong day one at the Conference USA Indoor Track & Field Championships saw several medals for FIU women's track & field, who leads the field with 50 team points after the first of two competition days.
Freshman
Kylie Neira, who earned CUSA Freshman of the Week honors two weeks ago, continued her impressive freshman indoor season by claiming the gold medal in the pole vault. She broke the freshman record with a jump of 4.16m, pacing the field and earning the Panthers' lone gold medal of the day.
It was another strong pentathlon performance for the Panthers, who tabbed both silver and bronze in the field.
Itsaso Madariaga Huegun, who already broke the pentathlon record earlier in the season, did it again to earn silver in the event, compiling a mark of 3911 and breaking her previous school mark of 3848.
Isabell-Mary Luik finished just behind her to earn bronze with a finish of 3711.
Rounding out the medalists for the Panthers was
Janiya Cesar in the weight throw. Cesar, who has had a strong indoor season, notched silver on day one with a throw of 20.65M.
FIU narrowly leads the field with 50 points, 2.5 points ahead of host Liberty with day two on the way.
