DENTON, Texas — FIU's women's tennis team secured a 4-1 victory over Texas State in a neutral site tilt on Saturday afternoon at North Texas' Waranch Tennis Complex.
The Panthers (2-3) got back in the win column with a one-sided victory over the Bobcats. FIU notched a hard-fought win in doubles and secured wins at Nos. 2, 1 and 3 in singles to score the four needed points for victory.
In doubles, Maria Lucia Araoz-Gosn and Vittoria Baccino started the match off with a 6-4 victory at No. 3. FIU dropped its doubles bout on Court 2, setting up a must-win on Court 1. Katerina Mandelikova and Victoria Hazmukova outlasted their opponents in a battle at the No. 1 slot, winning 7-6 (7-4 tiebreak) to put FIU up 1-0 after doubles.
Jelena Vico opened the singles scoring with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2, giving the Panthers a 2-0 lead. Mandelikova made quick work of her opponent at No. 1 a short time later, winning 6-2, 6-4. Up 3-0 in the match, Texas State scored its lone point with a three-set victory on Court 4. A short time later, Baccino clinched the win after dropping the opening set, with a come-from-behind 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 triumph.
