NEWARK, Del. — FIU's softball team suffered a 7-2 setback to Delaware in its Conference USA (CUSA) opener on Friday night on the road.
The Panthers (18-4, 0-1 CUSA) erased an early two-run deficit to the Blue Hens (10-11, 1-0 CUSA) before Delaware pushed back with five unanswered runs in their final two at-bats to claim the five-run victory. Zamya McBurrows and Kennedy Byrd each had an RBI, accounting for FIU's two runs, of which both came in the top of the fifth. Kally Meredith knocked out two hits, two of the Panthers' four in the game.
J'dah Girigorie started for FIU and surrendered two runs in the third before giving way to Brooke McNichols (3-1). McNichols allowed five earned runs in 3.0 innings, four of which came on home runs, to suffer her first loss of the season.
Delaware held a 2-0 lead after three, scoring twice off Girigorie in the third. The Panthers fought back with two runs courtesy of Byrd and McBurrows to tie the game at 2-all.
The Blue Hens had the final say, going back in front 3-2 with a two-out RBI double in the fifth. In the sixth, Delaware added insurance with a three-run homer and a solo shot, putting the game out of reach.
