MIAMI – FIU's baseball team earned a 13-10 comeback victory over Dallas Baptist in the series finale Sunday afternoon at FIU Baseball Stadium in Conference USA (CUSA) play.
Trailing 7-4, FIU (14-29, 6-15 CUSA) erupted for nine runs in the eighth inning, highlighted by a go-ahead two-run single from
Samuel Fischer and a three-run homer from
Mario Trivella, to secure the win.
FIU struck first in the second inning as
Mario Trivella doubled before
Aidan Cohall launched a two-run homer to deep right field—his second straight game with a home run—to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead.
The Panthers added another run in the third when
Luca Reyes blasted a towering 443-foot home run to center field, extending the lead to 3-0. Dallas Baptist cut into the deficit in the fifth with a two-run homer, but FIU answered in the bottom half with a run on a wild pitch to make it 4-2.
The Patriots surged ahead in the seventh, plating five runs on a two-run single and a two-run homer to take a 7-4 advantage.
FIU responded in a big way in the eighth. After walks by Trivella and
Caden Sammler,
Enrique Alvarez Jr. doubled to left-center to score Trivella, and a wild pitch brought home Sammler to cut the deficit to one.
Luca Reyes followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 7-7.
With the bases loaded, Fischer delivered a go-ahead two-run single to give FIU a 9-7 lead. Trivella then provided the decisive blow, crushing a three-run homer, his team-leading 10th of the season—to extend the lead to 12-7. A second wild pitch later in the inning capped the nine-run frame and pushed the advantage to 13-7.
Dallas Baptist added three runs in the ninth, but FIU held on to salvage the series.
On the mound, FIU utilized seven pitchers.
Jeremy Urena made his fourth start of the season, tossing 4.2 scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
Cooper Foster allowed three runs in 1.1 innings, while
Bryce Turner and
Mason Koczwara also saw action.
Tracen Cameron earned the win with a scoreless ninth inning, and
Jordan Vargas picked up his first save of the season.
Offensively, FIU totaled 12 hits. Reyes led the way with his second three-hit game of the season, while Trivella recorded two hits and three RBI.
Andrew Ildefonso and Alvarez Jr. each added two hits, and Cohall reached base three times in the win.
