HOUSTON, Texas — FIU's women's tennis team fell 4-1 to No. 57 Rice on Sunday afternoon at the George R. Brown Tennis Center, wrapping up a two-match road swing.
The Panthers (9-9) dropped the doubles point and three singles decisions, while
Aleksandra Simeva accounted for FIU's only point with a strong 6-2, 6-1 win on Court 6.
Rice took an early 1-0 advantage by securing doubles victories on Courts 2 and 3. On Court 1, the duo of
Katerina Mandelikova and
Viktorie Hazmukova took the match 6-3 before the point was clinched.
Entering singles play, Rice struck first, claiming its second point on Court 5. Simeva responded quickly with a straight-set victory to cut the deficit to 2-1. However, Rice answered with wins on Courts 2 and 4 to clinch the match.
Mandelikova's match on Court 1 went unfinished at 6-3, 2-6, 4-3 in the third set, while
Jelena Vico's match was halted at 4-6, 6-5.
