NEWARK, Del. – FIU's baseball program fell, 13-9, to the Delaware Blue Hens Sunday afternoon in the series finale at Bob Hannah Stadium in Conference USA (CUSA) play.
FIU (15-32, 6-18 CUSA) fell behind early, allowing a run in the first before Delaware plated four in the second to take a 5-0 lead. The Panthers responded in the third as
Cooper Rasmussen and
Mario Trivella opened the frame with singles, setting the table for
Samuel Fischer, who launched a three-run homer to right field, his fourth of the season, to cut the deficit to 5-3.
Delaware extended its lead in the sixth, scoring six runs, highlighted by a pair of home runs, to push the advantage to 11-3.
FIU began to chip away in the seventh as
Andrew Ildefonso drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Rasmussen. Later in the inning,
Aidan Cohall delivered a two-run homer. his third of the season, to make it 11-6.
In the eighth, FIU pulled within two as
Caden Sammler and
Cole Cleveland reached with singles before Rasmussen blasted a three-run homer to right field, tying him for the team lead with 11 home runs and cutting the deficit to 11-9.
However, Delaware answered in the bottom half with two insurance runs to secure the 13-9 victory and complete the series sweep.
On the mound,
Jeremy Urena made his fifth start of the season, allowing five earned runs over 1.2 innings.
Enrique Sierra followed with 3.1 innings of relief, striking out three while surrendering four earned runs.
Jordan Vargas allowed one run in an inning, while
Cooper Foster gave up two runs over 1.1 innings.
Mason Koczwara added 0.2 scoreless innings with a strikeout.
Offensively, FIU recorded nine hits, led by Rasmussen's three-hit performance, his third of the season, as he extended his hitting streak to seven games and now has 13 multi-hit efforts on the year. Trivella added two hits, while Fischer contributed a three-run homer and drew two walks. Alvarez Jr., Cohall, and Cleveland each recorded a hit, while Sammler reached base twice with a walk and hit-by-pitch. Ildefonso also reached twice via a walk and hit-by-pitch.

FIU heads back to Miami for a five-game week, beginning on Tuesday, May 5 to take on the Miami Hurricanes on the road at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. and can be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
