MIAMI — As FIU football continues its 25 Moments in 25 Seasons chronological timeline in celebration of the program's upcoming 25th season in 2026, the 10th moment in this series recognizes FIU's incredible comeback victory over Toledo in the 2010 Little Caesars Bowl in Detroit.
BOWLING IN D-TOWN
The historic nature of the 2010 campaign continued for the Panthers after securing the program's first-ever conference title with FIU's first-ever bowl trip, heading up north to the Little Caesars Bowl in Detroit, Michigan.
Playing in front of a nationally-televised audience on ESPN at Ford Field, home of the NFL's Detroit Lions, FIU had its opportunity on the night after Christmas to show itself on the national stage.
And boy, did the Panthers deliver in the biggest way.
A WALK-OFF WIN
FIU trailed Toledo 24-7 with just 9:44 left in the third quarter in a game that looked like the outcome had pretty much been decided.
However, as he often did, T.Y. Hilton got the ball in his hands and changed the game in a flash. Following a Rocket field goal, Hilton took back the ensuing kickoff 89 yards to the house and it was 'game on' in D-Town.
FIU's offense came alive from there with three-straight scoring drives, of which included another Hilton TD, scoring 24 unanswered points to take a 31-24 lead with 3:18 to go in the game. When Jack Griffin's field goal went soaring through the uprights from 31 yards out, it seemed all but a formality that Panther Nation would be walking away with its first-ever bowl win.
However, Toledo mounted a furious two-minute drill, scoring a TD with 1:14 to go and then converting a two-point conversion to go back in front, 32-31.
What occurred next was simply one of the biggest, and most improbable, drives in program history as FIU converted a fourth and 17 courtesy of a hook-and-ladder play to keep its bowl victory hopes alive. With time winding down, Wesley Carroll then found Greg Ellingson for a 20 yard completion to get into field goal range.
Downing the ball at the 17-yard line with just four seconds to go, Griffin's name was called on again in a critical moment. Griffin, with ice in his veins, etched his name into Panther lore forever with a perfect kick from 34 yards out to seal the win in walk-off fashion.
SETTING THE STANDARD
As the clock hit zero, raucous celebrations ensued in stands and on the sidelines.
FIU had finally arrived. The Panthers and coach Mario Cristobal ended 2010 with a conference championship and a bowl game victory, setting a new standard for the program.
25TH SEASON CELEBRATION, PRESENTED BY MICCOSUKEE CASINO & RESORT
The upcoming 2026 season for the Panthers officially marks FIU's 25th season of football competition, dating back to the Panthers' first-ever season in 2002. Over that time period, FIU has qualified for six bowl games, secured six Shula Bowl victories and produced countless NFL players, including Pro Bowlers T.Y Hilton and Jonnu Smith. The program has also seen many legendary coaches and outstanding players pass through the Panther facilities throughout its history, creating a litany of incredible moments experienced by Panther Nation.
Fans can be expected to be taken on a journey back to the inception of the program all the way up to the present day, recognizing the standard set by the first teams and acknowledging how many past Panthers have helped to build on that legacy. All of this will lead up and continue through the 25th official season in 2026, the second under head coach Willie Simmons, following one of the most historic seasons on record in his first year on the sidelines.
