MIAMI — As FIU football continues its 25 Moments in 25 Seasons chronological timeline in celebration of the program's upcoming 25th season in 2026, the next moment in the series features FIU's home victory over UCF on Sept. 18, 2011.

SUNSHINE STATE SHOWDOWN
Following a nationally-televised win over BCS-opponent Louisville on the road, the Panthers returned home to match up with UCF, out of the American Conference, for an in-state showdown. Under the lights at home, FIU was in search of its first 3-0 start to the season in program history and delivered another outstanding performance in primetime.

MARQUEE VICTORY
FIU's defense, anchored by future NFL standout Jonathan Cyprien, starred from the get-go against the Knights, holding a strong UCF offense scoreless in the opening quarter. The Panther defense continued to play a huge role in the game as the first half progressed as UCF was driving late in the half, already ahead 7-0.

With less than 20 seconds to go, FIU's Tevin Blanchard strip-sacked the Knights quarterback and the ball was scooped up by Isame Faciane near midfield. Faciane took the fumble recovery back 51 yards to the end zone for a game-changing play as the first half expired.

Early in the third quarter, the Panther special teams came up big, recovering a muffed punt deep in UCF territory. On the first play after the recovery, Darriet Perry waltzed into the end zone from eight yards out, putting FIU up 14-7. Jack Griffin tacked on a field goal with 1:41 to go in the third quarter and the FIU defense continued its domination from there.

Defensively, the Panthers racked up 6.0 sacks, adding the two fumble recoveries, and allowed just three points to UCF in the final 40-plus minutes of the game. When the clock hit zero, FIU had achieved another program-defining victory, this time at home against a Florida-program.

25TH SEASON CELEBRATION
The upcoming 2026 season for the Panthers officially marks FIU's 25th season of football competition, dating back to the Panthers' first-ever season in 2002. Over that time period, FIU has qualified for six bowl games, secured six Shula Bowl victories and produced countless NFL players, including Pro Bowlers T.Y Hilton and Jonnu Smith. The program has also seen many legendary coaches and outstanding players pass through the Panther facilities throughout its history, creating a litany of incredible moments experienced by Panther Nation.

Fans can be expected to be taken on a journey back to the inception of the program all the way up to the present day, recognizing the standard set by the first teams and acknowledging how many past Panthers have helped to build on that legacy. All of this will lead up and continue through the 25th official season in 2026, the second under head coach Willie Simmons, following one of the most historic seasons on record in his first year on the sidelines.
