MIAMI — As FIU football continues its 25 Moments in 25 Seasons chronological timeline in celebration of the program's upcoming 25th season in 2026, our next moment features FIU legend and NFL Pro Bowler T.Y. Hilton's 74-yard punt return touchdown at 14th-ranked Kansas on Aug. 30, 2008, his first-ever touch in a Panther uniform.

MADE IN DADE
Widely considered as the best athlete in Dade County as a prep, T.Y. Hilton starred on the football field and the basketball court during his time at Miami Springs High School. Averaging 18.7 yards per catch as a senior, Hilton racked up 785 receiving yards and had 20 total touchdowns in just 10 games.

Hilton held offers from high-profile schools Ole Miss, West Virginia and Florida, but chose to stay home and attend FIU. That decision proved to alter the course of the Panther program forever as FIU would soar to new heights during Hilton's reign in the 305.

A LEGEND IS BORN
Hilton's first-ever collegiate game featured FIU on the biggest stage as the Panthers took on 14th-ranked Kansas in Lawrence to open the 2008 campaign. Just a true freshman, Hilton wasn't expected to see much time on the field that day, other than in the return game.

Following a third down stop from the FIU defense with 4:40 left in the second quarter, Hilton jogged his way onto the field to return the first official punt return of his career. A high-arching punt took Hilton back a few yards to his own 26-yard line and, after a clean catch, he was shot out of a cannon from there. The dynamic freshman pressed the space upfield and made one cut to the sidelines, racing past the entirety of the Jayhawk defense for a 74-yard 'house call' on his first-ever touch as an FIU player.

It was on that day that the legend of T.Y. Hilton and 'T.Y. Goodbye' was born.

A FRESHMAN SEASON FOR THE AGES
Hilton's punt return proved to be the lid-lifter on what would be one of the best freshman seasons in all of college football. Accounting for 12 touchdowns (seven receiving, two rushing, one punt return, one kickoff return and one passing), he set the FIU single-season record for receiving yards (1,013) and all-purpose yards (2,162).

The do-it-all freshman was recognized as a Freshman All-American as both a punt and kick returner along with earning honorable mention Freshman All-America status. Hilton was named to the All-SBC First Team for his effort, both as a punt returner and all-purpose player.

25TH SEASON CELEBRATION
The upcoming 2026 season for the Panthers officially marks FIU's 25th season of football competition, dating back to the Panthers' first-ever season in 2002. Over that time period, FIU has qualified for six bowl games, secured six Shula Bowl victories and produced countless NFL players, including Pro Bowlers T.Y Hilton and Jonnu Smith. The program has also seen many legendary coaches and outstanding players pass through the Panther facilities throughout its history, creating a litany of incredible moments experienced by Panther Nation.

Fans can be expected to be taken on a journey back to the inception of the program all the way up to the present day, recognizing the standard set by the first teams and acknowledging how many past Panthers have helped to build on that legacy. All of this will lead up and continue through the 25th official season in 2026, the second under head coach Willie Simmons, following one of the most historic seasons on record in his first year on the sidelines.
