MIAMI – As FIU Football continues its 25 Moments in 25 Seasons chronological timeline in celebration of the program's upcoming 25th season in 2026, we revisit one of the most significant achievements in program history. On Nov. 27, 2010, the Panthers defeated Arkansas State, 31-24, at FIU Stadium, securing the program's first-ever bowl eligibility and first Sun Belt Conference championship.

HISTORY ON THE LINE
The 2010 season was unlike any other in FIU Football history. Entering the matchup against Arkansas State, the Panthers sat at 5-5 overall but had dominated Sun Belt Conference play, posting a 5-1 league record. A victory on their home field would clinch at least a share of the conference championship and guarantee the program's first-ever bowl berth.

FIU entered the contest riding a wave of momentum, having won five of its previous six games while averaging 44 points over its last three contests. In his fourth season as head coach, Mario Cristobal had the Panthers on the verge of a historic breakthrough.
With a conference title and bowl eligibility within reach, FIU delivered in dramatic fashion.

A CHAMPIONSHIP PERFORMANCE
On a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Miami, the Panthers completed one of the most memorable comebacks in program history.

FIU trailed early by a touchdown, but back-to-back scores from Darriet Parry put the Panthers ahead 17-10 late in the first half. A quick scoring drive to end the half for Arkansas State sent the sides to the halftime locker room deadlocked at 17-all. Jack Griffin made his second and third field goals of the game as the second half went on, but those sandwiched an Arkansas State TD, meaning the Panthers still trailed 24-23 with less than eight minutes to go.

The game and preserving FIU's historic season came down to one final drive.

Pinned deep in their own territory and facing fourth-and-seven near midfield, quarterback, Wesley Carroll found T.Y. Hilton over the middle to keep the drive alive. Two plays later, Hilton delivered the defining play of the afternoon. Taking a short slant pass from Carroll, Hilton broke through multiple defenders and raced 42 yards for the go-ahead touchdown with 1:42 remaining. Wayne Times added the two-point conversion to give FIU a 31-24 lead. With the crowd on its feet, the Panthers' defense sealed the victory. On fourth down, Jarvis Wilson batted away Arkansas State's final pass attempt, igniting a celebration that had been years in the making.

As the clock hit zero, FIU secured its first-ever bowl berth and claimed at least a share of its first Sun Belt Conference championship, marking a watershed moment for a program that had begun competition just eight years earlier. The victory remains one of the most important wins in FIU football history and stands as a defining chapter in the program's rise under Mario Cristobal.

25TH SEASON CELEBRATION
The upcoming 2026 season for the Panthers officially marks FIU's 25th season of football competition, dating back to the Panthers' first-ever season in 2002. Over that time period, FIU has qualified for six bowl games, secured six Shula Bowl victories and produced countless NFL players, including Pro Bowlers T.Y Hilton and Jonnu Smith. The program has also seen many legendary coaches and outstanding players pass through the Panther facilities throughout its history, creating a litany of incredible moments experienced by Panther Nation.

Fans can be expected to be taken on a journey back to the inception of the program all the way up to the present day, recognizing the standard set by the first teams and acknowledging how many past Panthers have helped to build on that legacy. All of this will lead up and continue through the 25th official season in 2026, the second under head coach Willie Simmons, following one of the most historic seasons on record in his first year on the sidelines.
