FORT MYERS, Fla. — Women's soccer (0-2-3) played to a 2-2 draw against Florida Gulf Coast (2-1-2) on Thursday evening at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
The match began with FIU's Valery Restrepo in goal, making a crucial save in the opening moments to keep the game scoreless. FIU took an early lead in the 5th minute when a Panther corner kick led to an FGCU own goal, putting FIU up, 1-0.
FGCU quickly responded with a goal of their own on a penalty kick in the 18th minute.
The remainder of the first half saw both teams exchange attempts, with a pair of FIU seniors in Mariana Barreto and Maya Maxwell both getting off shots without success. The period concluded with the score tied at 1-1.
FIU struck early in the second period as sophomore Maria Lucia Dogliani scored her first goal of her career at the 46:10 mark, assisted by Mariana Barreto, who recorded her first assist of the season and as a Panther.
FGCU was able to respond again with a goal in the 58th minute, tying the match at 2-2. Both teams continued to test each other's defense, with neither team finding the back of the net for the remainder of the match, ending the contest in a 2-2 draw.
Valery Restrepo made eight saves in goal, showcasing defensive strength against 17 shots faced. It was her most saves of the season and tied a career-high set last season against Louisiana Tech.
