MIAMI – FIU men's soccer's Finn Bauens was named American Conference Defensive Player of the Week, while graduate student Santi Possu earned Honorable Mention recognition, as announced by the league Monday afternoon.
 
FIU is coming off a strong performance Saturday, Sept. 19, defeating the Drake Bulldogs, 1-0, to secure its third home win of the season.
 
Bauens earns his first weekly award of the season after playing all 90 minutes on the backline Saturday, helping the Panthers hold off the Bulldogs and secure the shutout victory. The graduate student has started in six matches this season and has been part of three shutouts. He ranks third on the team in minutes played with 527.
 
Possu earned Honorable Mention recognition after scoring the game-winning goal against Drake, converting a penalty kick in the 73rd minute. The Cali, Colombia native leads the Panthers in goals (4), points (8), shots on goal (8) and shots (12). He has scored in back-to-back matches and has two game-winning goals this season, while ranking second in the American Conference in goals. Possu has started in six matches this season.
 
The weekly recognition marks Possu's second conference honor of the season after he was named Offensive Player of the Week on Aug. 31 following his game-winning goal against No. 20 NC State.
