JACKSONVILLE, Fla.– In a bid to snap a three-game losing skid, FIU volleyball (2-4) fought close in the first two sets but ultimately couldn't close any of them out, being swept at the hands of Duke (4-1) in Jacksonville on Saturday afternoon.
Getting behind 19-11 and 21-14 in the opening set, FIU turned it around late, getting as close as 23-22 thanks to a few kills by
Lana Sesar and a kill and block by
Chiara Fabbrini, but couldn't find the last two points of the set, ultimately dropping it 25-22 despite a .333 hitting percentage.
Set two looked to be in the hands of the Panthers for most of it. Fabbrini had four kills early down 13-9, and freshman
Gina Fedrigo stepped up to spark the team in her debut with two kills and a couple blocks. Going up 15-14 and then as high as 21-16 after another Fabbrini kill, Duke turned it on, going on an 8-2 run to take the lead. Several extra points ensued before the Blue Devils ultimately came out on top at 28-26.
Duke ran away with the third set, scoring the first seven points and holding serve from there. Both Fabbrini and
Jillian Huckabey reached nine kills in the set, but Duke won it 25-13 and the game 3-0.
Fabbrini and Huckabey led the way with nine kills. Fedrigo had four kills and three blocks in her debut.
