Prior to FIU: Attended North Broward Prep in Coconut Creek, Fla. his senior season... Drafted in the 28^th round of the 2011 MLB Amateur Draft by the New York Yankees... Was 7-0 with a 2.52 ERA with 101 strikeouts in 58.1 innings pitched... Named Browardhighschoolbaseball.com 2011 Pitcher of the Year... Was 2-0 with a 3.23 ERA with 61 strikeouts in 39 innings as a junior, 2-3 with a 2.40 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 33.2 innings pitched as a sophomore and 5-2 with a 2.97 ERA with 36 strikeouts in 36.1 innings pitched as a freshman... His team reached the 2011 Regional Championship... Clocked as high as 93 MPH, he was selected as a Preseason High School All-American Honorable Mention by Perfect Game USA... Although he will primarily be a pitcher at FIU, Lazaro also excelled with the bat hitting .390 with seven home runs, 24 RBI and 24 runs scored and 15 stolen bases... In the classroom, Lazaro graduated with a 4.30 GPA and is a member of the Golden Key Honor Society A member of the National Honor Society and listed in Who's Who Among American High School Students... Played summer ball with the Florida Legends... Also competed in swimming, cross country and soccer.
