Fernandez serves as an Assistant Athletic Trainer at FIU and is the school's first full-time Sports Nutritionist. She has worked at FIU since June of 2018.
Prior to FIU, Fernandez was a graduate assistant athletic trainer with the University of Miami (Fla.) from 2014-16, where she worked with the men's and women's track and field, cross country, volleyball and the football team. During her time with the Hurricanes, the indoor women's track and field team was crowned as ACC champs in 2016. Following her graduate assistantship at UM, she was hired at the school for a year-long position as an athletic training assistant and nutrition intern as she worked with the football team from July of 2016 to June of 2017.
Outside of her work at FIU and UM, Fernandez worked at SLAM Miami (Sports Leadership and Management) Charter Middle/High School as the Head Athletic Trainer from August of 2013 to July of 2014.
A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Fernandez earned a Bachelor's Degree in Athletic Training from Duquesne University in 2013. Fernandez also obtained her Emergency Medical Technician-Basic certificate during her time at Duquesne. Upon graduating, she was awarded the NATA District II Joe Iezzi Scholarship, which she used to earn her Master's Degree in Nutrition with a specialization in Exercise Physiology, Strength & Condition from the University of Miami (Fla.) in 2016. Upon graduated from UM, Fernandez also earned her Certified Nutrition Specialist certification, Florida State license in Dietetics and Nutrition and Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist certification. Fernandez is currently working toward obtaining another Bachelor's Degree, this time from the University of Alabama and in Human Nutrition wth her expected date of completion being August of 2020.
