Camp Report: Sunday Night Scrimmage

MIAMI (Aug. 16, 2015) – On Sunday evening, the FIU football team held an intra-squad scrimmage where the offense faced the defense for 11 series.

The first two series went in favor of the defense. The first series lasted four plays before an incomplete pass from Alex McGough to Clinton Taylor halted the drive. Series two resulted in a three-and-out thanks in part to a quarterback hurry by Lars Koht and a sack by Marques Cheeks.

The offense took charge in the third series, putting together a 14-play, 74-yard drive ending with a 1-yard touchdown pass from McGough to Anthony Jones. The offense converted five first downs during a drive that was highlighted by Thomas Owens who had two catches for 26 yards.

Drive four once again went in favor of the offense as Bud Martin led the Panthers 70 yards on nine plays. Martin went 4-of-5 for 42 yards and a 9-yard touchdown pass to Akil Dan-Fodio. Running back Lamarq Caldwell also gained 28 yards on four carries.

A pass breakup by Emmanuel Lubin ended the fifth series after a pass breakup on third and two.

Series six resulted in a touchdown for the offense. Trey Anderson scored on a 12-yard run capping a 13-play, 74-yard drive.

Drives seven, eight and nine saw the defense shut the door on the offense. During drive 10, Maurice Alexander had the offense moving before a 9-yard sack by RJ Harris ended the drive.

The final series of the night was a 3-play, 42-yard drive that ended with a 37-yard touchdown pass from M. Alexander to Mark Hutchinson.

The Panthers are off on Monday and will return to the practice field on Tuesday.

Like a Bostic: Panthers Learn From Former FIU Linebacker - Alex Bostic wasn't sure where to go Monday evening. Bostic had been here before but now the building was new to him. During his time as an FIU linebacker (2003-06), Bostic roamed the old FIU fieldhouse and knew exactly where everything was. The locker room was in the middle, meeting rooms divided by partitions were near the entrance, and the training area was at the rear in the one-floor building. The FIU coaches offices were in a portable trailer outside the fieldhouse. READ MORE….

Mike Up - FIU football strength coach Chad Smith will eagerly tell you Michael Montero has been among the standouts in the weight room during the team's recent offseason strength and conditioning program. Montero's body fat went down in the offseason, his strength numbers went up and he got mentally tougher according to Smith. As a former high school wrestler, shot putter and defensive tackle, Montero is no stranger to lifting heavy weights. READ MORE….
