Final Box Score
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Any doubts of the potent abilities of the Florida International University women's soccer team were put to rest in a 6-2 victory in Sun Belt Conference action over host Arkansas Little Rock on Friday evening.
With the win, FIU improves to 2-10-2 (1-4 SBC) and UALR falls to 5-6-2 (1-6 SBC). In the victory, FIU outshot, UALR 17-11. Heading into the contest, FIU had only scored seven goals through its first 13 games before unleashing six against the Trojans.
Arkansas Little Rock scored first as a Laura Cook shot at the 7:57 mark bounced off the left post and just got past FIU goalkeeper Juliana Gomez (Miami, Fla.) to give the Trojans' a brief 1-0 lead. The Golden Panthers then went on a 5-0 run to put the game away, with sophomore Janet Ligouri (Mississauga, Ontario) netting two goals and Charissa Gingerich (Cape Coral, Fla.) recording the hat trick.
FIU tied the game at 1-1 on Ligouri's first goal in the 16th minute, and then took a 2-1 lead when Ligouri rebounded a missed shot by Elizabeth Durozel (Miami, Fla.) and drove it past UALR goalkeeper Marsha Stewart in the 26th minute. Gingerich put FIU up 3-1 on an unassisted goal just two minutes later.
The seven-point effort, three goals and an assist, by Gingerich was just a point shy of joining the five-person club in the FIU record book. UALR cut the lead to 5-2 in the 88th minute on a goal by freshman Helga Bhasker, but the Golden Panthers answered in the game's final minute with a goal by sophomore Monica Savage (Coral Springs, Fla.).
With the win, Florida International extends its unbeaten string against Arkansas Little Rock to four straight. The Golden Panthers hold an 8-1-1 record against schools from the state of Arkansas. FIU will remain in the state of Arkansas to take on Arkansas State on Sunday with a 2 p.m. tilt in Jonesboro. Last year, in Miami, the two teams battled to a 0-0 tie on.
