MIAMI ? After battling to a pair of ties and a two wins, the Golden Panthers dropped their first contest of the 2005 season to host College of Charleston on Sunday in the final day of the Quality Inn & Suites Classic at Patriots Point Field.
The host Cougars scored in each half and freshman goalie Erin Smith recorded her first collegiate shutout leading the College of Charleston to its first win of the season in a 2-0 win over FIU in women's soccer action. The Cougars improved to 1-3-0 with the win while the Golden Panthers fall to 2-1-2.
College of Charleston jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on Kristin Rhyne's first goal of the season off an assist by Caroline Wertis with 4:54 left in the first half. The host Cougars held a commanding 11-4 advantage for the opening 45 minutes against the Golden Panthers.
Early into the second half, at the 51:38 mark, the Cougars' Lou Hudson headed the ball into the top left of goal from about five yards after Danielle Jordan's pass came off an indirect kick from the right of the box.
The Golden Panthers could not get its offense on track as they only were able to record two shots in the final 45 minutes and only six for the match.
In the loss, FIU goalkeeper Laura Snell made a season-high seven in 90 minutes of action and midfielder Valerie Patrick had a team-high two shots.
