Little Rock, Ark. ? Florida International was unable to overcome a two-goal halftime deficit as their second-half comeback effort fell short in a 3-1 loss to UALR in Sun Belt Conference women's soccer action Sunday afternoon at Burns Park in Little Rock, Ark.
Â
The loss drops the Golden Panthers (5-11, 3-7 Sun Belt) back into a tie with the Trojans (5-12, 3-7 Sun Belt) for eighth place and the final Sun Belt tournament spot with one match remaining for each team. FIU will need a win at Florida Atlantic on Friday and a UALR loss to Arkansas State on Saturday in order to reach the conference tournament.
Â
First-half goals from Alison Davis and Grace Rich gave the Trojans a 2-0 lead at the break. The Golden Panthers pulled one goal back in the 54th minute when senior Cassidy Proctor (St. Louis, Mo.) headed home a corner kick from freshman Nanna Rasmussen (Odense, Denmark). It was the third goal of the season for Proctor, who came into the year without any goals to her name.
Â
FIU staged a relentless attack to push for the equalizer, and yet it was UALR who would get the final goal just two minutes from time. A turnover in midfield gave the Trojans a breakaway in which Hannah Gibson scored off the feed from Davis to put the game away.
Â
Davis and Rich each tallied a goal and an assist in the match for UALR, while Trojan goalkeeper Jamie Laughlin made a match-high three saves. Junior Madeline Gannon (Ft. Myers, Fla.) made two saves for FIU, which out-shot UALR 6-2 in the second half, and 10-9 for the match. The Golden Panthers also held a 3-1 edge in corners.
