The FIU women's soccer team lost 2-0 to the Trojans of Troy, Friday night in Troy.
Â
Coming off a strong performance against the University of Miami that followed back-to-back shutouts, FIU couldn't muster any offense against the Trojans.
Â
"I didn't see the same team that has taken the field in the previous two weeks," said a disappointed Thomas Chestnutt. "It was a disappointing opening stanza all over the pitch and Troy took care of business."
Â
The Trojans took the lead in the 29th minute on a goal by Ceil Martinec. She was assisted by Evelyn Keith.
Â
Eight minute later, Elena Gaudin made the score 2-0 off the assists by Sydney Beasley and Ashley Davis.
Â
The Golden Panthers had a much better second half as they out-shot Troy 13-4 in the second period. However, FIU couldn't find the back of the net as they missed several opportunities including a penalty kick and a four yarder that could have given FIU the momentum to come from behind.
Â
"We squandered good opportunities," said Chestnutt. "If we could have found one, I think more would have followed."
Â
But the Golden Panthers couldn't find one, and the score remained 2-0 as time expired.
Â
For FIU, Claudia Cardenas (Visalia, Calif.) had four shots, two of them on goal; while fellow freshman Miriam Mercado (Davie, Fla.) added three shots, two on goal.
Â
The Golden Panthers return to action on Sunday as they travel from Troy to Mobile to face the Jaguars of South Alabama.
