FIU's men's soccer team had its best offensive showing of the season, but it wasn't enough to earn the “w” as they ended up with a 2-2 tie vs. Illinois-Chicago.
The start of Friday night's match at University Park was delayed by rain and lightning for over two hours, and when the match was over, it was already Saturday morning.
FIU (0-5-2) jumped on the Flames (2-1-2) early, when in the 6th minute Juan Guerra (Caracas, Venezuela) let loose a shot from the top of the penalty area that would find its way to back of the net, to put FIU on top 1-0.
The Golden Panthers would strike again in the 12th minute when Levi Coleman (Broken Arrow, Okla.) sent a pass from just outside the penalty area over to a streaking Juan Guerra, who took the pass on the right side and beat the Flames' goalkeeper Jovan Bubonja for his second goal of the match.
In the 31st minute, the Flames got one back when Charlie Trout beat an FIU defender to create space and let lose a long range shot that got past FIU goalkeeper Michael Anderson (Weston, Fla.) to bring Illinois-Chicago within one; and the score would remain 2-1 for the rest of the half.
Baggio Husidic of UIC didn't get to play much in the second half as he got sent off 26 seconds into the half, after a hard foul.
Despite being a man down, UIC would equalize in the 47th minute when Pawel Ligas sent a cross to Charlie Trout who finished from the right side of the penalty area for his second goal of the match.
Play was delayed once again in the 54th minute when the lights went out at University Park.
After the lights came back on, Bruno Barbosa (Miami, Fla.) almost lit up the scoreboard again when he shot a laser off a free kick that was sent away by the Flames' keeper.
FIU's defense, led by Phill Fisher (Swindon, England) and Cory Kendall (Pembroke Pines, Fla.), held strong the rest of the way, holding off the Flames' attack to keep the score tied at 2 heading into overtime.
In the 96th minute, Michael Anderson came up with a great save on the shot by UIC's Dan Simek, to keep the score knotted at two heading into the second overtime.
The second extra period didn't see any real scoring threats, as fatigue began to set in and defense was dominant.
The score would remain 2-2 as the match ended early Saturday morning.
