The FIU men's soccer team dropped its season opener on Friday, losing 3-0 to No. 24 North Carolina during day one of the Carolina Nike Classic.
Â
From the get-go, the FIU offense was smothered by the Tar Heel defenders as the Golden Panthers didn't take their first shot until the 67th minute of play.
Â
UNC took the lead in the 21st minute on a score by Brian Shiver. The score remained 1-0 until the 61st minute when Dustin McCarty knocked in the UNC's second goal of the game. The Tar Heels would tack on the third goal in the 82nd minute to bring the final score to 3-0.
Â
When all was said and done, the Tar Heels outshot the Golden Panthers 18-4. Juan Guerra, Steven Jair Cabas, Marc Lyon and William Thompson all took shots for the Golden Panthers. FIU starting goalkeeper Jesse Fullerton recorded five saves on the night.

The Golden Panthers will take on the defending National Champion Demon Deacons of Wake Forrest on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. as the Carolina Nike Classic wraps up.
