Despite two goals from Juan Guerra, the Golden Panthers were not able to get their first victory of the season as FIU battled UMKC to a 2-2 tie, Sunday afternoon at University Park.
Â
In the 16th minute, Steven Jair Cabas beat two UMKC defenders to break free on the right side. Cabas then tried to find Juan Guerra with a cross, but his pass sailed too long, ending the scoring threat.
Â
Former Golden Panther Levi Coleman gave UMKC the lead in the 31st minute when he scored on a header off a free kick from John Bayron Sosa.
Â
FIU wasted little time tying the score as C-USA Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Juan Guerra scored his second goal of the season in the 33rd minute, knotting the score a one. Marcos Balladares set up Guerra who shot from the top of the box and found the upper right corner of the net.
Â
Three minutes later, Guerra gave FIU its first lead of the young season by knocking in his third goal of the year. Guerra got open in front of the net and took a shot that was turned away by UMKC's keeper, and Juan's brother, Ricardo Guerra. Juan got a hold of the rebound and fired a shot that bounced off the crossbar, but then Guerra knocked in that rebound to make the score 2-1.
Â
In the 79th minute, UMKC nearly tied the score when Caleb Mitchell took a hard shot from the right side that bounced dangerously off the left post. A minute later, the Kangaroos did tie the score when Garret Guthrie took a pass from Miguel Rodriguez deep inside the box and knocked it in for his second score of the season.
Â
Neither team was able to score again in regulation as the match went into overtime knotted at two.
Â
After a scoreless first period of OT, Marcos Balladares nearly gave FIU the win in the 104th minute when he beat the UMKC defense and dribbled into the box but his shot was turned away by Guerra.
Â
In the 108th minute, Juan Guerra had two chances to win the match, but he was twice turned away by his brother Ricardo.
Â
The score remained tied the rest of the way as the match ended in a tie. With the tie, FIU's record goes to 0-3-1 while UMKC's moves to 1-1-2. The match saw 51 total fouls called, with FIU getting whistled for 32 of them, setting a new FIU single-game record. The Golden Panthers outshot the Kangaroos by a 19-15 margin.
Â
The Golden Panthers will travel to Tampa for their next match as they face the Bulls of South Florida next Saturday at 7:30 p.m. FIU's next home match will be on Friday, September 19 at 7 p.m.
