MOBILE, Ala. (February 20, 2010) - The No. 38-ranked FIU women's tennis team (5-3) picked up its second-straight road victory with a 5-2 win over the North Texas Mean Green (4-3) on Saturday, Feb. 20 at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Courts in Mobile, Ala
With the victory, FIU moved to 4-0 versus Sun Belt competition this season and improved to 3-3 on the road.
The Mean Green took an early advantage in the match. The North Texas duo of Irina Paraschiv and Amy Joubert defeated Liset Brito and Maria Jose Vallasciani, 8-6. In the No. 2 spot, the Mean Green clinched the doubles point as Barabora Vykydalova and Catalina Cruz downed Christine Seredni and Magali Holt, 8-6. Priscilla Castillo and Maria Spenceley won the third doubles match for FIU, 8-3.
After dropping the doubles point to North Texas, FIU battled back to win five of the six singles matches, including victories by Brito (6-3, 6-4), Seredni (6-4, 7-6 [5]), Spenceley (6-1, 6-2) Castillo (6-0, 6-7 [5], 6-1) and Vallasciani (6-7 [4], 6-4, 6-3).
The Golden Panthers continue their early-season road trip with a visit to Raleigh, N.C., to take on the N.C. State Wolfpack on Saturday, Feb. 27. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
