Tulsa Hands FIU a 2-1 Loss in Season Finale

Box Score MIAMI (Nov. 3, 2012) – A penalty kick goal in the 80th minute resulted in a 2-1 loss for the FIU men's soccer team on Saturday evening at the FIU Soccer Stadium, as the Panthers fell to the Tulsa Golden Hurricane (11-5-1, 5-2-1 C-USA) to end the 2012 season.

The Panthers (8-8-2, 0-7-1 C-USA) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the 38th minute when sophomore Colby Burdette netted his seventh goal of the season. Following a Tulsa foul, FIU's Quentin Albrecht took the free kick, finding freshman Daniel Gonzalez in the area. The Miami native sent a low cross in front of the net where Burdette was positioned and the Panther forward beat Tulsa 'keeper Mark Pais, slamming a shot into the lower left corner for a 1-0 FIU lead. Both Albrecht and Gonzalez were credited with assists on the goal.

The Panthers entered halftime with a 1-0 lead despite trailing in total shots, 7-5.

Tulsa tied the match up in the 51st minute when Omar Mata controlled a loose ball in the box and passed it to Cristian Mata, who shot into the lower right corner, beating Panther goalkeeper Robin Spiegel.

Each team created their chances in the second half, but neither could finish the go-ahead goal until Tulsa was awarded a PK in the 80th minute. TU's Mata stepped up to take the penalty with Spiegel on his line. The Golden Hurricane player stepped up to the spot and struck the ball to Spiegel's left as the freshman 'keeper dove to make the save. However, Spiegel was called for coming off his line early, giving Mata a second chance at the PK. The second time around the Golden Hurricane player found the back of the net, giving Tulsa a 2-1 advantage.

With the loss, FIU ends its 2012 campaign with eight wins – the most victories since the 2005 season. Albrecht led all FIU players with 23 points (10g, 3a), while Burdette finished the campaign with seven goals and four assists (18 points). Gonzalez led the team in assists, notching eight helpers on the year.

The loss dropped Spiegel to 8-8-2 for the year as the Wipperfürth, Germany, native made five saves versus the Golden Hurricane. The freshman goalkeeper ended his first year with the Panthers registering a 1.43 goals-against-average in 18 starts.
Before the game, the Panthers honored seniors Anthony Hobbs, Jo Dawkins, Lucas Di Croce, Chris Lamarre, Jhonander Camargo and Sebastian Frings, who took part in the final home game of their FIU careers.
