FIU Falls to Arizona, 2-0

Box Score TUCSON, Ariz. (Sept. 14, 2012) – The FIU women's soccer team fell to the Arizona Wildcats, 2-0, during the first game of the Loews Ventana Canyon Cats Classic in Tucson, Ariz., on Friday night.

"Our girls played hard tonight. "Head Coach Thomas Chestnutt said. "However, Arizona played a lot better than we did over the full 90 minutes. We had some good opportunities but were unable to find the back of the net. We didn't apply enough pressure to their defense and the Wildcats took advantage of that. We played tentative in the first half but made adjustments at halftime and did a much better job in the second half. We now have to put this game past us and focus on our game versus Arizona State on Sunday."

The Wildcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first half off of a goal by Candi Osei-Agyemang in the 32nd minute. Arizona added an insurance goal in the 77th minute when Susana Melendez scored to make it, 2-0 in favor of the Wildcats.

Redshirt junior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Savage dropped to 3-3-1 on the year, registering eight saves on the night.  Junior Nicole DiPerna led all Panthers with two shots (one on goal).

DiPerna gave FIU an early chance to get on the board with a shot on net in the 14th minute when Arizona goalkeeper Gabby Kaufman made the first of her three saves in the contest. Following the Wildcats' first goal in the 32nd minute, FIU sophomore Johanna Volz struck a shot in the 34th minute on net nearly tying the game, but Kaufman made the save to maintain the shutout. Sophomore Caroline Hernandez accounted for the team's final shot on net, striking the ball on frame in the 75th minute. Kaufman was once again in position to make save.

For the game, Arizona held a 21-5 advantage in shots (10-3 on goal).

The loss drops FIU to 3-3-1 on the year, while the Wildcats improve to 4-3-0.

The Panthers will close out the Loews Ventana Canyon Cats Classic on Sunday, Sept. 16, facing the Arizona State Sun Devils. Game time is 3:00 p.m. ET.
