@FIUMensSoccer Drops 2-1 Overtime Decision to New Mexico

Box Score Albuquerque, N.M. (Oct. 12, 2013) – The FIU men's soccer team (5-6-0, 1-2-0) clawed back to force overtime against New Mexico (7-3-2, 3-0-1) on Saturday night but ultimately fell, 2-1.

The Lobos went ahead in the 21st minute off Chris Wehan's first goal of the season. New Mexico's Niko Hansen was able to juke the ball away from the FIU defender and pass it to Wehan on the right wing, who was then able to score the close-distance shot.

In the 47th minute, junior Roberto Alterio chipped the ball at New Mexico's goalkeeper for the save. The ball rebounded and found junior Quentin Albrecht, who buried it from the box towards the far post to even the game at 1-1 and ultimately send the match to overtime. The goal was Albrecht's fifth, which ties him with Alterio for team-best, while the assist was also Alterio's first of the season.

In overtime, the Lobos' Kyle Venter sent a header off the cross bar, which redirected back to James Rogers, who sent New Mexico home victorious off a shot from point blank in the 99th minute.

The low scoring game saw just seven shots on goal, as freshman Lawrence Craggs finished with one save between the pipes for FIU. Freshman Marvin Hezel and Albrecht led the Panthers' offense with two shots apiece.

The Panthers next travel to UAB for an 8 p.m. match on Oct. 16 before coming back to Miami to host Old Dominion on Oct. 19. Game time is slated for 6:30 p.m. from the FIU Soccer Stadium.
