NEW ORLEANS, La. (Oct. 20, 2013) – The FIU volleyball team (9-12, 3-5 C-USA) fell to the Tulane Green Wave (20-2, 6-1 C-USA), 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-15), on Sunday afternoon at the Devlin Fieldhouse.
In set one, Tulane jumped out to a 5-1 lead and never looked back as the Panthers lost the opening stanza, 25-19. Set two began with an 8-2 run by the Green Wave. FIU pulled within one at 10-9; however, Tulane rattled off five straight for the 15-9 lead. The Panthers battled to cut into the Green Wave advantage, but ultimately fell, 25-17. Set three began as a tightly-contested battle as there were four ties and four lead changes through the first 16 points (8-8); however, Tulane pulled away for the 25-15 set victory and the 3-0 win.
Senior Kimberly Smith led all Panthers with six kills, followed by sophomore Lucia Castro and junior Brittany Mullee with five kills a peace. Redshirt Junior Jessica Egan recorded a team-high 15 assists, while senior Jessica Mendoza tallied a squad-best 11 digs.
Both teams were even in the block column with seven each, while the Green Wave held and advantage in kills (42-22).
The Panthers next travel to East Carolina to take on the Pirates on Friday, Oct. 25. The match is set for 7:00 p.m. ET.
