@FIUMensSoccer Rolls Past Kentucky, 4-1

Box Score LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 26, 2013) – The FIU men's soccer team (6-8-0, 2-4-0 C-USA) rolled past the Kentucky Wildcats, 4-1, Saturday night from the UK Soccer Complex.

"Tonight was all about getting three points," said Head Coach Ken Arena. "We needed the victory, and our team put in a strong performance. We created good chances and did well to limit a good Kentucky team."

FIU came out aggressive and fired off its first shot just 57 seconds into the first half, courtesy of junior Roberto Alterio. A chippy first half continued with both teams earning a combined 18 fouls, eight of which belonged to the Panthers.

FIU jumped ahead, 1-0, in the 25th minute when freshman Marvin Hezel netted his third goal of the season, which ties him for third on the team with teammate Luis Betancur. Off a free kick from 18 yards out, senior Gonzalo Frechilla connected with Hezel, who headed the ball into the far post for the goal. The assist was Frechilla's fifth assist of the season.

Junior Quentin Albrecht fired off two shots in the 26th and 27th minute, having the Wildcats' keeper save the first shot, while the other sailed wide of the net. Albrecht finished the night with four shots, which ups his season total to 51, which is good for third place in C-USA.

The Panthers finished the first half with four shots, while limiting Kentucky to just two chances in the first 45 minutes.

Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Mion had his first test of the game in the 56th minute, saving the first Wildcat shot on goal of the match. He finished the night with three saves.

Albrecht put FIU ahead, 2-0, in the 57th minute with his sixth goal of the season. Alterio carried the ball down the middle of the field and from seven yards out, found Albrecht, who connected nearside for the easy goal.

FIU added an insurance goal in the 71st minute off of Alterio's sixth goal of the season. From a ball played to the 18, Alterio sent the shot to the far post for the goal, while Frechilla was credited with his second assist of the game, upping his season total to six, which is a team-high. Alterio netted another goal six minutes later, after collecting a rebound from the near side. He hit the near post for the finish. His two-goal performance upped his goal total to seven, which is a team-high.

Kentucky dodged the shut-out with a last minute goal that was converted from the corner of the box from 25 yards out, after Mion punched the initial shot away from the net.

The Panthers finished the night with eight shots and converted three goals in the second half alone. It's the third time this season that the Panthers have scored three goals in a half.
