FIU Drops 5-2 Decision to Michigan State

MIAMI (March 7, 2013) – The FIU women's tennis team (2-8) lost to the Michigan State Spartans (10-3), 5-2, on Thursday afternoon at the FIU Tennis Courts.

Michigan State took an early 1-0 lead, winning the doubles point. The duo of freshman Michelle Sabado and senior Magali Holt fell to Emily Meyers and Julianne Gruber, 8-1, at the No. 3 doubles position and the No.1 doubles team of senior Rita Maisak and freshman Aleksandra Trifunovic, lost to Marina Bohrer and Catherine Parenteau, 9-7.

The Spartans added to their lead in singles play, as Sabado dropped a 6-0, 6-0 match to Michaela Silesova at the No. 6 position. FIU cut into MSU's lead, 2-1, as junior Giulietta Boha picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win over Meyers at the No. 4 spot. However, the Spartans added two more singles wins to clinch the match, 4-1, as Holt fell to Nicole Herzog, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 5 position and Trifunovic lost to Olga Chernova at No.3, 6-2, 6-2.

Maisak earned the Panthers' second point of the match with a 7-6 (4), 3-6, 10-7 victory over Parenteau at the No. 2 position. The victory extended the Minsk, Belarus, native's current win streak to four matches.

The match ended with 4-6, 7-6 (2), 10-6 loss for Carlotta Orlando at the No. 1 position to MSU's Bohrer.

FIU will next host the Southern Illinois Salukis on Tuesday, March 12, at the FIU Tennis Courts. The match is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. ET.
