Owls Take Finale, 12-1

Box Score MIAMI (May 18, 2013)  -  The FIU baseball team (25-29, 13-16 Sun Belt Conference) gave up nine runs over the first two innings as the Panthers fell to the Florida Atlantic Owls on Saturday, 12-1. FIU has clinched the No. 6 overall seed in the Sun Belt Tournament and will play the No. 3 seed Louisiana on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. ET.

FIU collected seven hits in the loss, with three of those coming from junior Zach Sweety. Sweety went 3-for-3 with a double, while freshman Edwin Rios homered to score FIU's only run. Sophomore Oscar Aguirre tacked on two hits in the loss.

The Owls got to FIU starter Alex Seibold in the first, as Geoff Jiminez homered to make it 1-0. Brendon Sanger had an RBI single later in the inning to up the score to 2-0.
The big inning for the Owls came in the second. All seven FAU runs were unearned due to a fielding miscue early in the inning that would prove costly. The inning was highlighted by a Levi Meyer home run. The Owls had a commanding 9-0 lead after three.

Rios provided the only FIU offensive production in the fourth inning with his seventh home run of the season.

The Owls would add three in the fifth to secure the 12-1, seven-inning victory.

The Panthers will be back in action on Wednesday at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, hosted by the University of Louisiana.
