Panthers Drop 3-0 Decision to Eighth-Ranked Seminoles

Box Score TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Aug. 31, 2012) – Playing its second match of the day at the FSU Volleyball Invitational, the FIU volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-16) decision to No. 8 Florida State on Friday night at Tully Gym in Tallahassee, Fla. With the loss, the Panthers fall to 1-4 on the year, while the Seminoles remain unbeaten at 4-0.

The first set saw FSU run out to a 19-7 lead, and a Seminole service error made it 19-8. FSU would then tally two-straight points before a score from sophomore Silvia Carli made it 21-9. The Seminoles picked up a pair of points to put the score at 23-9, and another FSU service error put the score at 23-10, but the Seminoles got the point back on a kill to bring up set-point at 24-10. Senior Marija Prsa came through with a kill to keep FIU alive, however, a final score by the Seminoles gave FSU a 25-11 set win and a 1-0 lead for the match.

In the second set, FIU jumped out to an early lead but FSU stormed back to take a commanding 21-11 advantage. The Seminoles would then pick up two-straight points before a kill from junior Kimberly Smith made it 23-12. FSU got the point back on a kill up the middle to put the Seminoles in set-point position at 24-12, and a score from the
right side gave FSU a 25-12 set win and a 2-0 advantage for the contest.

The third set saw the Panthers put up a strong fight, with FSU going ahead by six at 19-13. The Seminoles extended their lead with two-straight points, putting the score at 21-13, before Prsa posted a kill and Smith came up with a solo block to make it 21-15. FSU retaliated with a pair of kills to put the deficit back to eight at 23-15, and another kill brought up match point at 24-15. FIU managed one more score, but the Seminoles came up with the final tally of the match to come away with a 25-16 set victory and a 3-0 win.

Freshman Lucia Castro led the Panther offense with six kills, while Prsa chipped in with five kills. Freshman Ashlee Hodgskin registered a team-high 17 assists and notched one of two service aces for FIU, as freshman Gloria Levorin also recorded an ace.

Castro tallied her first-career solo block, also adding a block assist, while Smith posted a pair of blocks, including a solo stop. Leading FIU in the digs category was senior Ryanne Milligan with six digs.

FIU will wrap up action at the FSU Volleyball Invitational on Saturday morning when the Panthers take on Florida A&M. First serve is set for 11 a.m. at the Al Lawson Center, located on the FAMU campus.
