@FIUWomensSoccer Drops a Close Game in OT

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE (Sept. 20, 2013) - The FIU women's soccer team (2-6-0) fell to Jacksonville (4-4-0) Friday night, 2-1, in overtime.

The Panthers played the Dolphins to a defensive draw in the first half, with both team registering seven shots total. Freshman Talia McMurtrie missed wide left to start things off for FIU in the 16th minute and sophomore Morgan Morris had her shot blocked as the half came to a close. Redshirt junior Paula Zuluaga registered her fourth scoreless half of the season.

The Dolphins went ahead in the 68th minute when Miranda Fyfe registered her first goal of the season. Fyfe scored the unassisted goal off a long shot from the right flank, which found the back of the net.

Sophomore Madlen Weinhardt notched her third goal of the season in the 72nd, to even the score at 1-1. The goal ties her with junior Ashleigh Shim for team best. Weinhardt earned the unassisted goal on a second attempt after her initial shot was blocked and then rebounded back to the junior for the easy score.

Junior Kim Lopez almost put the Panthers ahead in the 86th minute when her shot hit off the crossbar. Lopez would come close again two minutes later when she missed just high. Zuluaga tallied her fifth save of the game with seconds remaining in the second half to send the game to overtime.

In overtime, the Panthers notched four shots in a three minute span, but ultimately lost, 2-1, when Sarah Moghadas earned her third goal of the season. Fyfe controlled the ball up the middle and made a few nice moves to set herself free. Her shot bounced off the left post and ricocheted in for the game-winner. Freshman Alyssa Robinson had a good look early in the overtime period, but Jacksonville's goalkeeper was able to time the shot perfectly for the deflection over the net.

FIU returns home on Friday, Sept. 27, to begin conference play against the Charlotte 49ers (5-2-0). Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
